Remove IRS Commissioner

Congressman Randy Forbes

This week, Members of House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform called on the Obama Administration to remove Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner John Koskinen, saying he has misled Congress and prevented congressional investigators from receiving the information that lawmakers have requested.

Allegations that Koskinen obstructed congressional probes come in the midst of an investigation into the IRS scandal, where government officials targeted politically active conservative groups for increased scrutiny on applications for tax-exempt status from April 2010 to April 2012. The investigation is ongoing, and has been complicated by Lois Lerner's refusal to testify (Lerner ran the IRS's exempt-organizations unit), and the IRS' failure to preserve and produce up to 24,000 e-mails relevant to the investigation.

At a news conference held in Washington on Monday, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform said that, should the Administration refuse to remove Commissioner Koskinen, all constitutional options remain on the table, including holding the Commissioner in contempt of Congress, as well as possibly impeachment.

Question of the Week: Do you believe John Koskinen should be removed as Commissioner of the IRS?

(  ) Yes.
(  ) No.
(  ) I don't know.

Cuban flag raised over embassy in Washington

Congressman Randy Forbes

This week, the Cuban embassy was re-opened in Washington, D.C., after being closed for over half a century. The United States also re-opened its embassy in Havana.  Since 1961, the two nations have not had formal diplomatic relations, and the United States has maintained a strict ban on the majority of trade with Cuba as long as the Cuban government continued to resist the establishment of democracy and disregard human rights concerns.

The resumption of diplomatic relations, however, came as a result of President Obama's announcement last December to begin efforts to remove Cuba from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list, loosen financial and travel restrictions, and authorize certain commercial sales and exports to Cuba's growing private sector.

While the Administration has the authority to normalize relations with Cuba, Congress holds the power to lift the over 50-year-old ban on trade between the two countries. Members of Congress who support the Administration contend that it is time to move away from outdated policies of the past. However, many remain concerned that the process to resume diplomatic relations has been premature and rushed, without the necessary reforms on Cuba's part in return for the concessions made by the United States.

Question of the Week: Do you agree with the Administration's decision to re-open the embassies, and re-establish diplomatic, economic, and travel ties with Cuba?

(  ) Yes.
(  ) No.
(  ) I don't know.
(  ) Other.

Am I Crazy?

The case of the Oregon bakery owners

Congressman Randy Forbes

Recently, a final decision was released in the case involving Melissa and Aaron Klein, the owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery in Gresham, Oregon, who declined to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, stating that participating in the wedding by baking the cake would have violated their personal religious beliefs. In response, the couple filed a complaint with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries for refusal of services.

On July 2, 2015, the Oregon Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries released the Final Order on the case, ordering the bakery owners to pay a fine of $135,000 in damages to the couple for "emotional suffering." According to the order, the bakery owners were fined due to the fact that they 1) declined to participate in the same-sex commitment ceremony by providing a wedding cake and 2) allegedly stated their intent to refuse similar requests in the future. In addition to the fine, the decision also banned the bakery from publishing, "any communication … to the effect that any of the accommodations, advantages, facilities, services or privileges of a place of public accommodation will be refused … any person on account of sexual orientation."

Supporters of this decision in the bakery owners' case contend that the bakery owners should be required to participate in the same-sex couple's ceremony, regardless of their religious convictions. Opponents of the decision, on the other hand, argue that the government should not force people to participate in events that violate their beliefs.

Question of the Week: Do you agree with the decision to fine the Oregon bakery owners?

(  ) Yes.
(  ) No.
(  ) I don't know.
(  ) Other.

Check your phone bill

Friend-

Have you taken a look at your cell phone bill recently? The average American pays roughly 17% in combined federal, state, and local government wireless taxes and fees each month on their bill, according to research by the Tax Foundation. We should all be able to agree that something needs to be done about this – especially since, for many Americans, cell phones are increasingly their sole means of communication and connectivity. It's unfair for the government to single out one set of consumers (like wireless users) -- yet that is exactly what they are continuing to do.

I'm championing a bill to stop state and local governments from tacking on any new taxes and fees on specific communications services, like wireless, for five years.  During this freeze, there is time for state and local governments to make common sense changes to their communications tax structures, modernizing them to reflect current usage patterns. Take a look at H.R. 1087.

Yours in service,

Randy

P.S. Recently, I also supported a bill to keep internet access tax-free, take a look here.
