 | Friend, Russian influence has threatened one of our most basic democratic rights—the ability to choose our own leaders. And in the words of former FBI Director James Comey, “they’ll be back.” That’s why we must demand that President Trump and Republican leaders stand up against foreign threats to our liberty. But for this to work, we’ll need Congress to join us. Only swift and definitive action can prevent future attacks on our democracy. That’s why Stand Up Republic is launching a new petition to insist upon strong Russia sanctions.
The Senate took the lead by passing a sanctions bill, but its fate now rests in the House with Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Despite the Senate’s bipartisan support for financial sanctions and more Congressional oversight, House leaders like Ryan and McCarthy continue to delay proceedings and weaken penalties. Instead of protecting our democracy, they’re focused on pleasing Mr. Trump. Friend, the longer we wait to act, the more we concede to Vladimir Putin—a foreign master enriching and empowering himself at the expense of free societies. We must send a strong message.
