instaPoll: Do you support bold proposals like the 414 Plan to cut through the red tape and speed up construction projects?

Congressman Randy Forbes

This week, the President delivered the State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress and the American people.  In a wide-ranging speech that touched on a variety of national concerns from economic recovery, to changing energy policy and addressing the ongoing housing crisis, the President offered his Administration's 'blueprint' for the next year without providing many details.  One goal articulated by the President was his desire to "clear away the red tape that slows down too many construction projects" through an executive order.  While specifics of the President's proposal remain unclear, I have offered a bold proposal, the 414 Plan, that does just that--clears away the red tape, puts Americans back to work, cuts costs, and accelerates necessary construction and improvements to our nation's roads and bridges.

The 414 Plan

GOAL: Seeks to build roads and bridges in 414 days, rather than 13 years.

INSPIRATION: Rebuilding of the collapsed Minnesota Bridge that took only 414 days.

KEY PROVISIONS:

  • Halts the red tape regulation stifling road and bridge projects
  • Protects any regulations pertaining to safety or durability
  • Jumpstarts efficiency in road and bridge projects, building jobs and improving infrastructure
  • Moratorium in place for only 5 years to give opportunity to revisit and reevaluate

Question of the Week:
Do you support bold proposals like the 414 Plan to cut through the red tape and speed up construction projects?

(  )  Yes, I support bold proposals like the 414 Plan to cut through the red tape.
(  )  No, I do not support proposals like the 414 Plan that cut back on regulations.
(  )  Other
(  )  I am unsure.

Learn more about the 414 Plan here.

Read my statement in response to the State of the Union address here.

Take the poll here.

2012 is here -- the chance to change course -- to reject the failed, fearful policies of the Obama Democrats and embrace a new course of greater freedom and opportunity for all.   In under 10 short months, Americans will go to the polls to elect the next President of the United States -- and it's up to us to ensure that it is not Barack Obama.  So let's roll up our sleeves and get started!

In this week's installment:

Nothing On But Reruns...
If you thought the 2012 State of the Union was very similar to President Obama's past State of the Union speeches, you were right...

One-Term Proposition
Check out the RNC's new hard-hitting ad exposing the "State of Our Union" under the failed presidency of Barack Obama.

No One at the Wheel
"The Oval Office must be a quiet place these days. Trying desperately to save his job, Barack Obama has given up on actually doing his job. He's courting wealthy donors for campaign cash. He's crisscrossing the country rallying disaffected voters. And he's running disingenuous ads in five battleground states."  (Reince Priebus, "President Obama Has Given Up On Doing His Job," Fox News, 1/22/2012)

Audacity of Hypocrisy
"Over the last three years, Barack Obama has proven to be nothing but a typical politician --willing to promise anything, and equally willing to break any promise."
(Reince Priebus, "The Ethics of Audacity," Townhall, 1/18/2012)

That's Stretching It
Unable to run on his record of radical ideology and failed policies, Barack Obama's desperate new campaign advertisement makes many fabulous claims that don't hold up.  (Analysis, "Obama's First Ad Riddled With Falsehoods," Fox News, 1/19/2011)

Strangers to Reason
"Reasonable Profits Board?"  Here's an idea for liberal Democrats in Congress with too much time on their hands -- how about a "Reasonable Budget Board" to police bloated liberal spending and runaway debt?  (Pete Kasperowicz, "Dems Propose Reasonable Profits Board to Regulate Oil Company Profit," The Hill, 1/19/2012)

A Better Question
Commentator Nile Gardiner turns Obama-loving liberal journalist Andrew Sullivan's recent -- and ludicrous -- question on its head.  (Nile Gardiner, "Why Are Barack Obama's Critics So Smart?" Telegraph, 1/17/2012)

Nobody's Fooled
"Opponents say it would threaten the groundwater in Nebraska, where some 21,000 miles of pipeline already exist. But, as the American Enterprise Institute's Kenneth Green notes, any spilled oil would have to flow uphill to reach the Ogallala Aquifer."  (Jonah Goldberg, "A Question of Priorities: Whatever He Claims, Creating Jobs Isn't What Motivates Obama," National Review, 1/20/2012)

Dumbo Visits Disney
"Hey, Mr. President! You've just destroyed the Keystone XL pipeline project and thousands of new union jobs. What are you gonna do now?  'I'm going to Disney World.'"  (Andrew Malcolm, "Obama to Disney World to Talk Up Tourism Today, But Tourists Are Banned," Investors, 1/19/2012)

Unforced Error
"Vice President Joe Biden took the handoff and headed for the end zone.  Blockers in front of him, plenty of daylight, and -- speaking in the friendly confines of not-so-conservative San Francisco -- the VP even had the political home-field advantage.  Then Biden, just inches from paydirt, threw in a last-second juke for style points, shouting out that 'the Giants are on their way to the Super Bowl.'"  Not quite what 49er fans wanted to hear...  (Dave Urbanski, "Joe Biden's Major Gaffe at the Expense of 49ers Fans," The Blaze, 1/19/2012)

They Said It: Obama's Decision To Kill Keystone Reflects Broken Promises

RNC RESEARCH BRIEFING
They Said It!
Obama’s Decision To Kill The Keystone Pipeline Reflects His Broken Promises To Create Jobs And Bring The Country Together

MSNBC’S Joe Scarborough: “We haven't talked about one issue that on any other day we'd be talking about nonstop. A big policy decision yesterday by the Obama administration. I must say, I don't understand it for a lot of different reasons, but I'm going to let you guys comment on it. Keystone, the president killed the permitting for Keystone. And I'm just wondering, wouldn't this be a good issue for him to reach out to the middle on? Am I wrong about that?”
Time’s Joe Klein: “No, the campaign this year is like the stupid Olympics. These guys -- Obama just made, I think, a very big mistake at a time when we have 9% unemployment, the one most important consideration in any political decision is jobs. And whether there are 2,500 jobs or 2,000 jobs, you go with it.”
Scarborough: “What’s the motivation inside the White House? Because the president -- the president wants to win independent voters. He wants jobs, he wants more energy. What is the hold up here?
Klein: “He wants his base.”
Scarborough: “The base would not forgive him for this?”
Klein: “College campuses, there’s a lot of environmental sentiment, this is a big issue.”
Time’s Mark Halperin: “I don't think it's purely political. I think the president doesn't think this is the right -- that the country's ready to make the decision, primarily because of safety concerns. But I think it is reflective of the fact he has not brought the country together on controversial issues which he promised to do.” (MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” 1/19/12)
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT OBAMA’S MISGUIDED MOVE ON KEYSTONE
Chicago Tribune: “Obama made a decision that will deny the U.S. a reliable source of oil. Note that Canada has never threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz. Obama made a decision that will cost the U.S. good jobs. He seems to think those jobs will still be there when he gets around to making a decision on the pipeline. But they may well be gone for good.” (Editorial, “Pipeline Politics: Misguided Obama Blocks Keystone Pipeline,” Chicago Tribune, 1/19/12)
The Washington Post: “But, clearly, constructing the pipeline would still result in job gains during a sluggish economic recovery.” (Editorial, “Obama’s Keystone Pipeline Rejection Is Hard To Accept,” The Washington Post, 1/18/12)
·         The Washington Post: “We almost hope this was a political call because, on the substance, there should be no question. Without the pipeline, Canada would still export its bitumen — with long-term trends in the global market, it’s far too valuable to keep in the ground — but it would go to China. And, as a State Department report found, U.S. refineries would still import low-quality crude — just from the Middle East. Stopping the pipeline, then, wouldn’t do anything to reduce global warming, but it would almost certainly require more oil to be transported across oceans in tankers.” (Editorial, “Obama’s Keystone Pipeline Rejection Is Hard To Accept,” The Washington Post, 1/18/12)
Laborers’ International Union of North America: “Instead of celebrating their victory by hugging a tree they should hug a jobless construction worker because they’re the ones who are going to need it.” (Laborers’ International Union of North America , “Job-Killers, 2; American Workers, 0,” Press Release, 1/18/12)
·         Laborers’ International Union of North America Called Obama’s Decision “Politics At Its Worst.” “‘The score is Job-Killers, two; American workers, zero. We are completely and totally disappointed. This is politics at its worst,’ LIUNA General President Terry O’Sullivan said. ‘Once again the President has sided with environmentalists instead of blue collar construction workers – even though environmental concerns were more than adequately addressed. Blue collar construction workers across the U.S. will not forget this.’” (Laborers’ International Union of North America , “Job-Killers, 2; American Workers, 0,” Press Release, 1/18/12)

In this week's installment:

Radical Rejection
Obama's radical anti-prosperity "green" base wins out over American job creation -- real shovel ready jobs -- and energy availability with his rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline.
(Editorial, "The Anti-Jobs President: Obama Rejects the Keystone XL Pipeline and Blames Congress," Wall Street Journal, 1/19/2012)

RNC Winter Meeting Update
"In 2008, Obama had no record. So he ran on hope and change. In 2012, he has a record. So he's running on fear and division. That means he's already admitted that he failed. Every time he tries to make the election about something other than his record, he's tacitly admitting failure."
(Reince Priebus, "RNC Chairman Reince Priebus Remarks Excerpts From 2012 RNC Winter Meeting," GOP.com, 1/13/2012)

Your Contributions Are Making a Difference
"The past year 'was indeed a record-breaking year for the RNC,' said Chairman Reince Priebus in a statement. 'We raised more major-donor money this year than in any off-year in history, while our grassroots supporters continued to play a critical role in our financial success. Thanks to the generosity of all our supporters, the RNC will be a powerful force this election year.'"
(Dave Boyer, "Rebounding RNC Bests Democrats in Money Chase," Washington Times, 1/12/2012)

Obama's False Hope
"'Hope and change' may have defined Obama's 2008 campaign, but 'false hope' more accurately defines his presidency. At the beginning of 2012, three years into the Obama presidency, 70 percent of Americans believe the country is now on the 'wrong track.'"
(Reince Priebus & Wayne MacDonald, "Barack Obama's False Hope," Fosters.com, 1/9/2012)

"America's Choice"
Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson offers his election year strategy for making the choices voters will face in November clear.  (Ron Johnson, "A 2012 Republican Strategy for Congress: A Series of Votes Can Clarify the Differences Between the Two Parties on Energy, Taxes, Spending and Regulation," Wall Street Journal, 1/11/2012)

Blame Game
"Obama has done nothing during his three years as president to address the central cause of the debt run up -- the unsustainable increases in entitlement spending. And he has actually worsened the deficit with a feckless $800 billion stimulus bill and a new $1 trillion health care entitlement.
So this is not the Bush deficit. It is the Obama deficit, and it's threatening to ruin the country."
(Keith Koffler, "Obama Called Smaller Bush Debt Rise 'Unpatriotic,'" White House Dossier, 1/13/2012)

No Comparison
As if the liberal elitists who underwrite Obama's "fundamental transformation" of our beloved nation into a socialist, oppressive "utopia" have anything in common with the patriots who fought and died to establish it.  (Neil Munro, "Obama Acclaims Campaign Donors as Modern Day Minutemen," The Daily Caller, 1/10/2012)

Fear Itself
"In our New Year's poll, when asked what news event they fear most about 2012, Americans by a margin of two-to-one said Obama's reelection."  (Paul Bedard, "Poll: Americans, 2-1, Fear Obama's Reelection," US News, 1/9/2012)

Above the Law?
"Mr. Obama believes that he no longer needs to seek the advice and consent of the Senate to appoint officials. He can just nominate them at the 11th hour, skip the required paperwork, complain when they aren't confirmed, then announce a 'recess' appointment when the Senate isn't on recess."  (Diana Furchtgott-Roth, "NLRB: Obama Bludgeons the Constitution," Real Clear Markets, 1/12/2012)

Visit Ottack2012.com
The RNC has launched a new website "Ottack2012.com" to hold President Obama accountable for his record as a typical politician who resorts to negative campaign attacks because he is unable to run on his failed record. The website highlights how then-candidate Obama promised to provide post-partisan leadership but transformed into your standard, run-of-the-mill politician once he was inaugurated. Along with the website, the RNC released a web video entitled "Barack Obama: Typical Politician" demonstrating that President Obama won't be able to match the rhetoric of candidate Obama when he realizes his job is on the line.
