Congressman Randy Forbes | | | In May of this year, Lois Lerner, the former Director of the Internal Revenue Service's tax-exempt division, was held in contempt of Congress for her refusal to testify regarding her role in an IRS scandal where government officials targeted politically active conservative groups for increased scrutiny on applications for tax-exempt status. As a part of ongoing Congressional probes, a formal request for Lerner's email records was made. However, the IRS - responding to these requests - claimed a crash of Lerner's computer hard drive and the recycling of backup tapes as reasons for their inability to provide the records to Congress. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen recently testified that he learned about a problem with Lerner's computer in February and about the missing emails in April; however, the IRS did not notify Congress of the problem until June. In response, Congressman Forbes called not only for an independent special counsel to lead the investigation, but also for independent computer forensics investigators to recover this critical information. Question of the week: Do you believe an independent special counsel should be appointed to lead the IRS investigation? ( ) Yes. ( ) No. ( ) I don't know. ( ) Other. Take the Poll here. Dinesh D'Souza Attacks Government's Legal Actions Against Aaron Swartz in New Film America Dinesh D'Souza's latest film, America, includes a segment examining the Obama administration's handling of the Aaron Swartz case. The segment includes an interview with Rand Paul, who discusses some of the long-term ramifications of the government's abuse of power. "I wanted to share the story of Aaron Swartz in order to help Americans to recognize the kind of power that our government has over us and how they can use that power," D'Souza said. "Americans across the spectrum should unite against this kind of heavyhanded abuse of power." Watch the clip from America here. Petition to Allow Soldiers to See America Begins A petition on the White House's "We The People" page is requesting that the Obama administration allow Dinesh D'Souza's new film America to be released on U.S. military bases around the world. The petition needs 100,000 signatures to succeed. "At this time," the petition reads, "there are no plans for the film to be released on U.S. military bases around the world. Since this is a patriotic film that celebrates America, we are asking the White House to allow this film to be seen by the men and women who have sacrificed for our country, at movie theaters around the world which happen to be located on U.S. military installations." Congressman Randy Forbes | | | Last week, a Sunni extremist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), intensified its attempts to overthrow the Shiite-majority Iraqi government and military. ISIL, which originally grew out of Al Qaeda, has overtaken major cities in Iraq and is currently moving toward the capital in Baghdad. The Sunnis and Shiites represent two branches of Islam in Iraq where political and sectarian rifts between the two have resulted in years of political violence. Yesterday, President Obama said, "The United States will continue to increase our support to Iraqi security forces. We're prepared to create joint operation centers in Baghdad and northern Iraq to share intelligence and coordinate planning to confront the terrorist threat of ISIL. And through our new Counterterrorism Partnership Fund, we're prepared to work with Congress to provide additional equipment. We have had advisers in Iraq through our embassy, and we're prepared to send a small number of additional American military advisers -- up to 300 -- to assess how we can best train, advise, and support Iraqi security forces going forward. American forces will not be returning to combat in Iraq, but we will help Iraqis as they take the fight to terrorists who threaten the Iraqi people, the region, and American interests as well." Question of the week: Do you believe the United States should get involved in the current situation in Iraq? ( ) Yes. ( ) No. ( ) I don't know. ( ) Other. Take the Poll here. Congressman Randy Forbes | | | According to widely circulated news reports, 60,000 youth will cross our nation's southern border this year, up tenfold from 2011. According to Reuters, the number of illegal immigrants under the age of 18 entering our country is likely to double in 2015 to nearly 130,000, costing American taxpayers $2 billion. So far, unaccompanied youth have been housed in shelters in Arizona and military bases in Texas, California, and Oklahoma. This month, the Department of Justice announced a new program to enroll approximately 100 lawyers and paralegals to provide legal services at taxpayer expense to youth crossing our border unaccompanied by their parents. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security announced a renewal of the Administration's policy to grant relief from deportation to youth brought into the United States illegally by their parents, if they meet certain criteria. According to the Department, as of April, over 560,000 individuals have already received such relief. Opponents, including Congressman Forbes, have criticized the Administration for prioritizing amnesty over the security of our borders and enforcing the law. Read more about Congressman Forbes' work opposing amnesty and securing the border here. Question of the week: Do you support the actions taken by the Administration regarding the surge of youth crossing the border? ( ) Yes. ( ) No. ( ) I don't know. ( ) Other. Take the Poll here. Judicial Watch Demands DOJ Records Pertaining to Dinesh D'Souza Judicial Watch, a nonprofit watchdog group, has demanded that the Department of Justice turn over all records pertaining to Dinesh D'Souza's indictment for breaking campaign finance law. The organization is hoping to discover whether D'Souza was specifically targeted by the government as retribution for his political films. If the Department of Justice does not respond within a month, Judicial Watch will file a lawsuit against the government. "It's unlikely that government bureaucrats will respond as the law requires," Fitton said. "Too often, we have to sue. A lawsuit is always a viable option." Read more here. | | | | | | Dinesh D'Souza Reveals Opening Sequence From America Dinesh D'Souza previewed the opening sequence of his upcoming film, America, at the 2014 Republican Leadership Conference this past Saturday. The clip depicts a montage of American landscapes and sets up some of the arguments presented in the film. America will arrive in theaters nationwide on July 2nd. "The left is winning the cultural war," D'Souza said. "Republicans treat politics as a hobby while the left engages more in academia, culture and the media. Conservatives have been politically outmatched because they're not fighting on their natural battlefield. I want to step back from the narrow political debate and take a 25,000-foot view of the culture." Watch the opening sequence of the film here. America Showtimes and Theaters Now Available!
