This weekend, as Virginians are preparing for Hurricane Irene to make landfall, there are practical steps you can take before for the storm and afterwards to secure your home to ensure adequate safety.

The Virginia Evacuation Coordination Team for Operational Response, along with the Virginia Department of Transportation, has created preparedness videos on hurricane evacuations and emergency supplies that can be viewed on YouTube or at www.ReadyVirginia.gov. You can keep Dominion Power's number (866) DOM-HELP or (866) 366-4357 on hand to report outages or downed lines. For general information about the storm, you can dial 211. In addition, I have compiled a list of resources to help you this week before, during, and after the hurricane.

Be sure to print this article, and the following web resources, in the case you cannot access it due to a power outage.

Bad Luck...
On his "Debt-End Tour," Barack Obama makes a desperate, pathetic attempt to blame everything under the sun but his own failed leftist agenda for driving our economy into the ditch.  (Byron York, "Obama: I Reversed Recession Until 'Bad Luck' Hit," Washington Examiner, 8/15/2011)

...Or Just Plain Bad???
Hmm...  Let's look back a bit and see what really caused things to take a nose dive. (James Sherk, "Recovery Stalled After ObamaCare Passed," Heritage Foundation, 7/19/2011)

instaPoll: Do you support halting indirect attempts at amnesty?

Congressman Randy Forbes
A recent memo written by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton and sent to all agents in charge, chief counsel, office directors and special agents, stated that ICE does not have enough resources to deal with illegal immigrants who happen to be students, and therefore, they should have less of a chance of deportation due to the criteria used when making decisions about who will be deported known as "prosecutorial discretion."

RNC Chairman Priebus Calls On President Obama’s Campaign To Pay For His Debt-End Bus Tour

“If The President Would Rather Campaign Than Lead, His Re-Election Campaign Account Should Foot The Bill.”

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement calling on President Obama to use his campaign account to pay for his Debt-End Bus Tour instead of taxpayers:

“This week taxpayers made a donation to the Obama re-election campaign.  No matter what the President says, his Midwest bus tour is nothing but a campaign trip. As his approval rating hits a new low, the White House is resorting to desperate measures to salvage his image.  He said he would make jobs his number one focus.  This week he is focused on just one job: his own.

“Worse yet, he’s campaigning on the taxpayer’s dime.  Rolling through the Midwest in a brand new million-dollar taxpayer-funded tour bus, the President is holding town halls to rally his disaffected supporters in states crucial to his re-election.  He’s talking about campaigning against Congress and dolling out talking points, not policy plans.

“If the President would rather campaign than lead, his re-election campaign account should foot the bill.”

Background:

MSNBC’s Chuck Todd Says Obama’s Re-election Campaign Is “Stitched Throughout This Trip”: “It feels like a campaign trip. it certainly walks like one, it quacks like one, and politics comes up in it. Even the president yesterday talking about this plan he's going to unveil in September, he said, and if congress doesn't pass it, he'll campaign against them. So the campaign is stitched throughout this trip.” (Chuck Todd, MSNBC’s Daily Rundown, 8/16/2011)

Hardball’s Chris Matthews Admits Obama Is Hitting The Campaign Trail: “He hits the campaign trail today, of course, with town hall stops in Minnesota, ending up in Iowa … ” (Chris Matthews, MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, 8/15/2011)

instaPoll: Weigh in with your thoughts on the nation's credit rating downgrade

Congressman Randy Forbes
Last Friday, the credit rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) downgraded the nation's credit rating from AAA to AA+, the first downgrade since the U.S. won the top ranking in 1917. S&P said that it made the move because the deficit reduction plan passed by Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough to stabilize the country's debt situation. One of the biggest questions after the downgrade was what impact it would have on both Main Street and Wall Street. The nation's long-term loans are considered the basis for all other interest rates, so higher rates on long-term U.S. debt could lead to borrowing costs on everything from mortgages to car loans. That would also make it more expensive for state and local governments, companies, and consumers to borrow money. S&P said that in addition to the downgrade, it is issuing a negative outlook, meaning that there was a chance it will lower the rating further within the next two years. Analysts say it could be tough for the U.S. to regain the AAA rating soon, especially given its current economic challenges. S&P officials implied that it will take years to see a meaningful change in the U.S. fiscal situation and in the government's ability to cut the budget. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 635 points Monday, dropping below 11,000 as the impact of an unprecedented downgrade to the U.S. credit rating reverberated through financial markets. However, stocks rebounded Tuesday when the Federal Reserve announced that it had voted to keep interest rates near zero through 2013. The market again plummeted on Wednesday and the volatility is forecasted to continue.

RNC Chairman Priebus Strongly Condemns Harry Reid’s Appointment of DSCC Chair Patty Murray to ‘Super Committee’

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement calling on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to withdraw DSCC Chair Patty Murray’s appointment to the Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:

“Harry Reid’s appointment of Patty Murray to Co-Chair the Select Committee on Deficit Reduction is absolute proof that Democrats are not serious about deficit reduction. As Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Murray is the Senate Democrats’ fundraiser-in-chief. The Select Committee is no place for someone whose top priority is fundraising and politics. Majority Leader Harry Reid should immediately withdraw her appointment.”

In this week's installment:

RNC Backs Up GOP Reformers
"Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Friday that the RNC is doing all it can to protect incumbent GOP state senators targeted for recall from being 'hijacked' by state employee unions." ("Priebus Says RNC 'All In' On Recalls," Associated Press/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 7/29/2011)

Course Correction
"If you want a government in Washington that spends less, that taxes less, and encourages our private sector to grow, you need a Republican in the White House." (William McGurn, "Boehner Repeals Murphy's Law: The Debt-Ceiling Deal Puts the GOP in a Good Position for 2012," Wall Street Journal, 8/2/2011)

Winning Strategy
In the debate over the debt ceiling, Republicans in Congress have kept the focus where it needs to be -- on cutting spending.  (Michael Barone, "Republicans Win When the Fight Is Over Cuts Not More Taxes," Townhall, 8/1/2011)

A Gipper-like Win
Americans For Tax Reform head Grover Norquist lauds the debt ceiling deal as a precedent-setting victory for the Party of Ronald Reagan.  (Grover Norquist, "A Victory For Reagan Republicans," Daily Caller, 8/1/2011)

Look in the Mirror
Democrat Party head accuses Republicans of "trying to impose a 'dictatorship.'" Bit ironic, right?  (Mike Allen, "Debbie Wasserman Schultz Says GOP Rhetoric Could Spark 'Chaos,'" Politico, 7/27/2011)

Nancy Pelosi -- Guardian of the Galaxy!
Nancy Pelosi says what Democrats are "trying to do is save the world from the Republican budget. We're trying to save life on this planet as we know it today."  (William Kristol, "Pelosi's Reactionary Liberalism," Weekly Standard, 7/28/2011)

Cool It!

Crumbling Footholds
"Just as House Democrats played defense to protect the growing number of vulnerable members in last year's midterms, Obama is looking like he'll be scrambling to hold onto a lot of the states that he thought would be part of an emerging Democratic majority."  (Josh Kraushaar, "Obama's Battleground-State Blues: The President's National Poll Numbers Aren't Good, But They're Worse in Battleground States," National Journal, 7/26/2011)

Doing Harm

With Friends Like These
