| VIDEO: Why I Celebrate Independence Day Dear Friends, 25 years ago I stood in a courtroom in Washington, DC and raised my arm to take the oath of citizenship. That moment changed my life forever. For me, America's exceptionalism is personal and real. I chose this country as my home at the age of 18 because I wanted to the opportunity to be the architect of my own destiny. I wanted the American Dream. Today, we celebrate America's independence and the beginning of that American Dream. For 241 years, America has been a shining city on the hill. It is an inspiration for those living under oppressive regimes, a refuge and a home, a grand experiment in freedom, a prosperous land of opportunity, a force for good in times of evil, and a force for order in times of chaos. In honor of America's legacy and future as the greatest, freest, and most decent society in existence, here is my Independence Day message for you: As an immigrant who has chosen to become an American, I feel especially qualified to reflect on what is special about America. Having grown up in a drastically different society—in my case, Bombay, India—I am acutely conscious of the daily blessings that I enjoy in America.
